Lawyer for Legal Name and First Name Change in Paris

Previously, the procedure to change a last name had to be done directly by decree—a long and complicated process—and the person concerned had to justify a legitimate interest.

A reform came into effect on July 1, 2022. It is now possible to change a family name by a simple declaration at the town hall, without having to justify a legitimate reason, once in the life of an adult, who can choose between their father’s name, their mother’s name, or both names hyphenated.

Before the 21st Century Justice Modernization Law, the procedure to change a first name had to be done before the Family Court Judge at the Tribunal de grande instance.

This procedure was possible when the requested change was justified by a legitimate interest, which was verified by the judge.
Since the 21st Century Justice Modernization Law, which came into effect on January 1, 2017, no judge is required to change a first name.

Now, it is no longer necessary to appear before the Family Court Judge to change a first name.

The change of first name is entrusted to civil registry officers at town halls.
